I'm still hoping for that miracle that they get me in tomorrow and that it's something simple like rear bearings that can be sped to Gunnison overnight and slapped in on Friday.  I've been looking forward to this ride really all summer.  Darby was a special man, and this could be a great legacy and tradition.

It could be worse Seth. All I wanting to do was change the air filter, and the bike ended up like this.  And I took this picture just now.

Shop hasn't even called me back, hopefully I'll hear from them today.   When I get it in they'll have to diagnose the problem and maybe order parts if it's something I don't already have.  I had to break down (almost literally breakdown) and cancel the rooms last night.   Cry  I am going to really miss this ride, I enjoy the company of our Colorado crew a lot, and was looking forward to meeting some new Valkonauts.

This whole situation has convinced me that I need a second Valkyrie, and I'll be on the lookout for one.

That's a B____.  Crossed fingers things will turnout for the best and they will find an easy fix.

Meanwhile - When you find that 2nd Valk - STAY AWAY FROM HAULBIKES unless you want to wait a month for delivery.  Another week, and my wait will be a MONTH since they agreed to haul it from North of Detroit.  I could have PUSHED it here by now.  But THEY TOOK THEIR PAYMENT IN FULL IMMEDIATELY - then shipped the bike to YORK PA, 716 MILES FURTHER AWAY.  It's still there, has been for over a week. I have almost all of the parts for the mods I want to do, already in hand.  BUT NO BIKE TO PUT THEM ON.  They put on the contract, a HUGE cancellation fee of $150.  BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO PISS ME OFF AND I WILL WANT TO CANCEL.  Have not kept me updated - UNLIKE THEIR PROMISE - I've had to ASK - WHERE IS MY BIKE EVERY WEEK.  Now they say IT WILL BE ANOTHER TWO WEEKS.

BTW, when I was in excitement mode last weekend I went to the Shooter's Grill website.

http://www.shootersgrillofrifle.com

It looks like someone should bring a camera in along with their sidearm.  The waitresses look like secretarial candidates for Oss.

Hope you all have a great, SAFE ride.  Remember our good friend Darby, and he'll be riding along in spirit.

Go to the Iowa Chapter under the Main VRCC and take a look at the one for sale here in Iowa.   It is a good looking ride.

Thanks, that is a good looking bike R.J..  I'm leaning more toward a lower mileage Interstate unless I see a Tourer that knocks my socks off.

What?  You can't rent a cage?  Your friends will all be there whatever you're utilizing.  Of course that's only an option if the ride wasn't about impressing your buddies with your ride.

And, yes, you do need a second Valkyrie.

No, those guys aren't so shallow that they'd be impressed by my ol' bike.   Roll Eyes  I'd just prefer to ride on group rides.

Here's a few I took.  I'll put up a few more later, I'm working on pipes now so can't stop long.

Top of Independence Pass about to go through Aspen.  Shot with long telephoto to compress perspective.
(I don't get why this sometimes doesn't display - filename too long for UNIX?) I'll rename it...

In Rifle at Gateway motel, Markaritas flowing...

In Rifle at Shooters Grill

Markt Packin a Colt Python Safe Queen just to show off...

Shooters Oss secretary candidates lookin good when not posing; packing heaters

Ron, cop'in a feel - I'm tellin your girlfriend Ron

My Shooters girfriend looks best when not posin...

But looks OK Posin too.

The Owner in Sunday Go To Meeting Clothes (Literally, that's what she told me)  Apologized for not packin heat.  I forgave her just this once.

Fixin Bruce's 490,000 highest mile Valkyrie (that we know of).  Plug on the starter relay overheated and melted. It was a team effort, several of us contributed on the fix.  Bruce was real pleased, kept sayin the whole week here, "don't anybody pinch me cause I don't wanna wake up!"  That's Bruce in Blue.

On the road to Florence, Hwy 24 bridge

Markaritaville at Florence.  This was Patron & Grand Marnier Markaritas   A good time was had by all, even a couple who didn't care for them before, we got a couple added to the flock!  They have been saved!

JoshCornKid's better half Melanie.  What a cutie!  I mean that in a good way - sharp engineer too...

Josh with our new friends from KC, might be on the next Darby ride.

And,  bringing up the rear - last but actually FIRST, the namesake of this annual ride, Darby a couple days before he was taken from us, last year in Silverton on the Labor Day San Juans Ride:

Heh,hehhh.....   sorry Seth but that's some funny crap

It is, I chuckled when I saw it this morning and I NEEDED A FREAKING CHUCKLE!

First, I'm really bummed (just ask Cheryl, DEPRESSED might be a better word) that I missed this ride.

And, I'm back to the old drawing board.  Tech took my bike out for 80 MILES this weekend, a few more than I was expecting.  He is now hearing the noise -- says he thinks it isn't anything dangerous, maybe speedometer but not sure.  He put the bike on a lift and looked for any play in the wheels and bearings.  He listened with mechanics stethoscope but couldn't hear anything.  That's because it is only apparent when engine is running and bike is in motion.  I paid $25 for the joyride/diagnosis, but now THE SOUND IS WORSE THAN EVER!  Seriously, now it's a STEADY OBNOXIOUS CHIRP.  Is it bothering me?  Well in the last couple weeks I've ordered bearings (front and rear), belts and tensioners, BonS' super duper vac plugs, a brass bush for the choke lever and today I just ordered a new speedometer cable, which I DO NOT think it is.  I rode downhill in neutral with the engine off today and couldn't hear either wheel bearings or speedo cable, just quiet.  Seems the chirping affected by both both throttle and clutch.  When I pull in clutch, it goes away.  I'm about at my wits' end, and can't get any wind therapy!

Oh yeah.  I also ordered Interstate carb springs, but that's to chase a bog I get in first gear.

I wonder if you could put it on a treadmill - like a dyno - and reproduce the sound while searching it out with a stethoscope.

Thank you to all that showed up in support of our friend Darby. A special thanks to JP and DDT foe riding out as far as they did to hang with us. Very special folks to me.  cooldude

It was a great weekend.  One of the best ever for me.  Enjoyed everybody, not one negative anything - even Ali's breakdown was a positive, group-building exercise.  Enjoyed the Shooter's Grill - particularly breakfast when the staff's attention wasn't diverted by 40 harley riders.  (OK, they did mess up my steak, don't EVER order well done, but that was a small blip)

Speaking of Ali, just want to make sure Bruce's generosity is attaboy'd - he gave me a wad toward the bar tab such that after the group contribution and his - and he added a tip - he wound up being the biggest benefactor of the Markaritas - even more than me.  THANKS BRUCE.

Also THANKS RON for the BBQ on the wrap-up.  Excellent job, nice place, love your patio.  Good thing June didn't see it, or it would be on her Honeydo's.

Thanks Dick for the bottle of Grand Marnier - gave the markaritas that extra PIZZAZZ!

Enjoyed meeting the couple from KC - Megan and I forgot his name.  She's gonna email me if she wasn't giving me a Hollywood "let's do lunch", said next time we see them they will be on a bike, maybe for next year's Darby ride.  She has a couple ideas I can check on the Markarita's, if I hear from her I'll do some research.  It's a dirty job but somebody has to do it.  Maybe they will want to do an annual ride, or more.

Looks like a great time was had by all!  Glad it was only the 1st Annual Darby Ride.  I'll never miss another (knocking on wood), noises be dammed!  Went over every bolt and nut I could get to, found a very loose lower left shock bolt.   Thought, "Eureka!  This must be the culprit"!  No such luck.  I'm finally confident that whatever it is it isn't serious enough to kill me (famous last words).  Bike felt good and solid at 110 today.

Arrived home yesterday afternoon safe and sound... I was unable to get online, however, due to a connection problem that has now been resolved. All better now, though, and good to go!

What an adventure! Fab visit with Damon and his family, met some great folks and new friends, got lots of solo riding in with a blending of group riding as a bonus, not to mention a couple of seriously fun tire-kicking sessions... And, much of that throughout some of the best and most scenic bike riding country on the planet!!! Thanks for letting me tag along and soak up some of the goodness that is so abundant in our VRCC family... I may have to haul-off and do that again!

I had so much fun on the Darby Ride I've been kicked around another overnight weekend ride. Not this weekend but next. Maybe RMNP or Wy or Utah. Any interest?  cooldude
Silver Bullet still has the mystery chirp.  Slapped on a brand new speedo cable (no luck) and rode the crap out of it today.  We have already seen freezing temps here in the mornings.  My birthday is coming up, so I'm determined to get to Moab before permafrost.  I figure I've got roadside assistance, new bearings, a new u-joint and a coin that says In Valkyrie We Trust.  What can possibly go wrong?

Depends on the weekend, my next couple weeks are busy. If I am available, I'll go.

Think I may have found the source of my bike's chirping problem.  Sounds too similar to be coincidence.

Found this old post.  Pay attention to the fifth full paragraph.

Now compare it to what I was recently describing here, especially reply #5.  Almost exactly the same symptoms.

Winter's almost here, I've gotta get this done soon!

I thought you had done a U-joint.  Well you should have a spare on hand anyway, You will need it eventually if you keep the bike forever.  I replaced mine around 75k, it was toast.  Fortunately it failed on a local ride.

Based on the replies here and feedback from phone calls it looks like the best time will be the first weekend of October. Also the RMNP route seems to please the masses. I'm thinking meet at Johnson's Corner at 10:00 am on October 3rd. Roll through the park and find a place to stay near Grand Lake. Sunday head north and ride through Walden and south through the canyon on 14 and into Fort Collins where we can split up and head for the shed.  cooldude
