I thought Cherryvale was an Oklahoma suburb....Red dirt in either direction ,so Yeah,it sooner territory
You're thinking of Coffeyville. Cherryvale has brown dirt, very light brown with a lot of clay, but brown. Aww heck, I'll admit it... We'll take anyone, regardless of the color of your dirt. We're easy.

I can't say that I am familiar with those folks. In my defense, I haven't been back except to visit Grandma in 35 yrs.

Ok, I meant to get this posted weeks ago... August 19th, 20th, 21st! Ground Zero will be Wamego Kansas. Come join us for a late summer ride through the rolling Flint Hills and beautiful Kaw Valley. If you're up for it we will show you Both of the curves in Kansas, and two of the three hills as well. Wamego has two motels and a Bed & Breakfast, I will be happy to arrange a room block if there is interest. Camping is also available either at nearby lakes or Roadkill's place. (We might even find accommodations for one or two of the more well mannered members inside if you wish). The loose agenda for the weekend will be a BS session Friday to kick tires and tell lies, an informal breakfast Saturday morning (Biscuits & Gravy, probably some pancakes, sausage/bacon maybe even a few eggs. We'll see) Then we will have a short pre-ride and then take off for a nice ~140 mile cruise through the heartland. There will be a fuel stop along the way for those who are fuel capacity challenged followed by a late lunch (location to be revealed later, we are still arguing over two very nice places) Still working on a plan for Saturday evening, but there is plenty to do and see if you are so inclined. Local attractions: The OZ Museum! See one of the largest collections of Wizard of OZ memorabilia in the country. Don't want to pay to see the full exhibit? Check out the museum gift shop for some fun and interesting gifts. OZ Winery! Sample some locally produced wine, but not a lot if you are planning to ride! They also have some fun and funky gifts. Want to see a Sicilian villa but don't want to pay for the flight? Check out the Ditto-Leach house a couple of blocks from downtown. It's not open to the public but you can still admire it from the sidewalk. Wamego also has the Historic Columbian Theater http://columbiantheatre.com/calendar/default.asp and a beautiful city park with a pond, picnic tables and historic Dutch windmill. Wamego is just 15 minutes east of Manhattan and about 40 west of Topeka.

Sounds great! Let me know where I need to make reservations [Brian on Dale's account] I'll call tomorrow and get an idea of prices before anyone gets too comitted, but is there a preference (B&B, New motel, or older motel - I assume they will be priced accordingly but honestly haven't stayed at any of them)?

Gunslinger, Roadkill I would be honored to join in on your ride and festivities! I will make every effort possible to attend, let us know about the rooms . With you all's connections with the local government men , surely we can all attend without extra scrunity for some of our more "wild side" members , whomever they maybe ? JDW

Brian and Dale I noticed Wamego has a dinner theatre and are doing a show that weekend. Have either of you been? Was it worth it and was the chow any good? Maybe they would do a group rate for us if enough were interested? Just thought I would throw this out there to see if anyone else is interested.

They have undergone some recent changes, Not sure if they still do Dinner and the theater, the last show we atteneded was more of an hors d'oeuvres and drinks but I will check as that was a fundraiser and not a regular showing. The link to the season schedule is in my post above. The weekend in question the play is titled "Hoo Haw" and is a take off of the old Hee Haw show. Kerri and I have been to that once and it was a good show. The historic Columbian Theater is certainly worth taking the time to see. Besides the architecture and history involved, the paintings from the 1893 worlds fair on display are worth the price of admission in my humble opinion. Edit - The show in August is a performance only, No dinner served. But if interested check out this virtual tour and you can get an idea of what the Columbian Theater has to offer. http://columbiantheatre.com/tour/default.asp

OK I'm back from 5400 miles in 18 days all on the bike. Had an absolute blast! I'm in for at least part if not all of this weekend. I'll wait to see what motel/B&B is chosen and make my reservations from there.

My apologies, I have been trying to get info on the B&B in town. I had been unable to get an answer by phone and schedule has kept me from finding anyone in person. I see a for sale sign on it now, and am going to assume that it is not open for business. Wamego Inn and Suites is a fairly new motel here in town and I believe they finally have their pool open. The other option for lodging is the Simmer Motel (right across the road from Inn and suites) The simmer is an older motel, but from what I understand is very well kept and clean. They have pictures and video. Regular prices at the Simmer are about the same as the deals posted by Bark2 for the Inn and Suites. The Simmer has a pool as well, and is set back off the highway a little more. http://www.wamegoinn.com/http://www.simmermotel.com/

Ok, I meant to get this posted weeks ago... August 19th, 20th, 21st! Ground Zero will be Wamego Kansas. Come join us for a late summer ride through the rolling Flint Hills and beautiful Kaw Valley. If the ride is the one I test rode for roadkill, Alma is the only fuel stop. Got a little detour since I rode it, with bridgework on K4, add about 10 miles, but it has a really nice road as good as the rest of it. The whole thing is on roads I ride frequently.

The route will be shortened a bit from what we shared with you, there was some redundancy and backtracking in that route. it's been tweaked a bit and isn't pushing 200 miles any more. Where is the Bridgework on K4?

K-4 WABAUNSEE 7/25/2011 - 11/30/2011 Road Closing Bridge Replacement
Monday, July 25, a bridge replacement project will begin on K-4 over the South Branch Mission Creek, approximately 4 miles northeast of Eskridge in Wabaunsee County. Crews will replace the bridge and adjacent bridge approaches. On July 25 at approximately 9:00 a.m., both northbound and southbound K-4 will be closed to all but local traffic from the east K-99/K-4 junction in Eskridge to the west I-70/K-4 junction in Topeka. A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will follow a marked detour via K-99 south to K-31; east on K-31 to US-56 in Burlingame; then east on US-56 to US-75; north on US-75 to I-470; west on I-470 to the I-70/K-4 junction in northwest Topeka. Drivers must use alternate routes during the project duration. The scheduled completion date for the entire project is late November 2011.

Ahhh, Thank you. Well, we will be making a few more modifications this week and doing another pre-ride this weekend or next.
A question was raised about attending the Columbian Theater. They are not doing dinner on the Friday/Saturday performance in August. Is this something that everyone wants to do? Tickets are $15 and they have group rates for groups larger than 15.

OKay Cyndi and I are in with reservations at Wamego Inn , the gal I talked to says "do you have a GardenDeals coupon?" I said as a matter of fact yes I do, why? "A lot of people are calling for that weekend and they have a coupon". I just chuckled . So we are in for the motel, Oz museum, and Rambler's steak deal. Thank's Jerry for the tip!! We would be interested in doing the Theater if anyone else is going, so Gunslinger I guess that is two towards a group rate if your working on that. Thanks and I look forward to seeing everyone I missed at InZane and even those I didn't !!!!!! JDW
