Its so about time that something like this happened, Act like a jerk get treated like a jerk Its such an interesting turn of events, I cannot imagine any politician doing this. Her bags wheeled back to Congress Rand Paul Has A Solution To State Of The Union Problem — Cuts Out Pelosi Entirely Senator McConnell is in charge of the Senate. If Mrs. Pelosi refuses to allow the president to deliver the State of the Union in the House, I propose we move it to the Senate and make it happen! — Senator Rand Paul (@RandPaul) January 17, 2019 Secret Service Official: Pelosi Never Contacted Us For Security Plan Before Canceling Trump Speech

But I'm afraid that transfering the State of Union to the Senate wouldn't work, after all, Mitch has gone missing.

Pelosi's bags were packed for a congressional trip to Belgium and Afghanistan, but the trip was canceled just before the delegation was set to leave by President Donald Trump, who let her know in a letter that she would have to fly commercial if she still wanted to make the trip.
Im sure McConnell never expected to have to stand up and be counted in his job in Congress. He has been doing a bit more lately to stand up and be counted though.

In my view, all the elected officials (house + senate) and Executive branch nominated employees should be with *no* pay until the shutdown is over.

But I'm afraid that transfering the State of Union to the Senate wouldn't work, after all, Mitch has gone missing. If you're gonna do a silly political stunt like that, make sure you go to the RIGHT office, and make sure you bring enough copies of your letter... Luckily some Republican staffers were kind enough to help them print out extra copies for their stunt.... https://www.foxnews.com/politics/freshmen-dems-stumble-in-quest-to-confront-mcconnell-on-shutdown

@Serk: I thought the whole stunt hilarious, but well made. I don't get it how politicians are allowed to keep hiding from their responsibilities. If house representatives are unable to find a Senator, I imagine regular folks... But they got the letter read in the Senate: https://twitter.com/SenJeffMerkley/status/1085655025404112896I guess Mitch wasn't around the Senate anyway, besides being paid to be there.

There's a cap on maximum UC payments regardless of income. Besides, There's not a single member of Congress who can't weather this without a paycheck. They can just give highly paid speeches like the "Broke Clintons" did when they left the White House.

@Savago - Think you'll make it to Taos this June? You're still very wrong on most things, but you seem to have lowered your hostility, I'd love to discuss thing with you over a (Bourbon|Scotch|Beer|Water)... Seriously... Maybe you could even convince me that Linux is ready to take over the desktop and not just the back office... (And yeah, I know.... Android and all that...)

@Serk: I'm unsure really, already spent my vacations days this last December with my family. Thanks for the comment about hostility, I'm working towards to be more respectful and understanding on people's opinions (still got a lot of work to do, but I really enjoy talking to people in the whole political spectrum). It is funny that you mention Linux in the desktop... I think the first time I heard about the 'year of the desktop linux' was like, way back in 2000/2001? I used to be a die-hard Linux user (i.e. " _ Real man compile their own kernel!") but in 2008 I started using macbooks. Given the never ending price increases on @Apple products coupled to decrease of expandability + less ports (i.e. only USB-C? Seriously?), in 2016 I went back to PC + Linux. I still have a macbook for testing purposes, but most of my work I use a heavy duty workstation to do compile jobs. In the end, people use what they can either afford (e.g. PCs) or what works for them (i.e. Linux for Pros, OSX for others). Regular users don't really care about security and MS has improved a bit their game. But yeah, I would love to share a beer and have some good laughs.

@Savago: Hope you can make it.... I was using Linux just for S&G back in the mid 90's (Even got Red Hat X to run on a Diamond video card which wasn't 'spose to be possible)
I've accepted Windows (I refuse to use Apple ANYTHING) for the desktop, and Linux for the back end stuff (I run all my Linux boxes init 3 if I have anything to say about it)
I used to be a Gentoo Stage 3/2 purist, but even I'm using just plain 'ole Debian on my boxes now... (Which are just VMs on my ESXi farm anyway at this point...)

@Serk: pretty cool!
MS now even allows to install a Ubuntu chroot of some sort on their OS (what a change from 'Linux is a cancer!' era...).
As long I have a terminal + Emacs | vim I'm happy.
I guess with time, we just get more pragmatic and want to get the job done at the end of the day and have more time to ride our bikes.

So, speaker Pelosi thinks that there's insufficient security available to cover the state of the union address because of the shutdown, but there's enough security available to cover an entourage of legislators on a goodwill tour of the middle east? Got it.

What’s Nancy going to do with a free week on her itinerary since she can’t fly off for a week on the governments dime? Will she fly commercial, will she go to her office and start working on a compromise, will she fire up her kettle and conjure up a potion to turn Trump liberal?
When I heard Trump was sending Nancy a letter I thought he was making some type of offer for a meeting to try and have a consensus on how to end the shutdown. When I heard about the plane cancellation I thought it might be an internet hoax. And the finger pointing explodes.

Not speaking for anyone but myself but, reading between the lines, it appeared as a justification for this boon doggle from my perspective. An obvious public relations tour at our expense. Yes, I am bias'd. Obviously the "Speaker" has no plans to seek a compromise. It appears (to me) that the "Speaker" and her fellow Dems are only intent to make the President look bad. Both sides deserve some blame for this partial government shutdown and the lack of security at our borders. Correct me if I am wrong but, I believe all those furloughed are eligible for unemployment benefits? Rams

Rams I'm not sure on that. I think it depends on their 'essential-ness' ? I think there has been some recent action on this, but not sure on the details.

... I believe her rational is that the Secret Service And Homeland Security isn’t being paid, and the military is. ... Paid or not I'm sure the necessary Secret Service and Homeland Security personnel are still on the job. I agree that it is juvenile (at best) politics. The question is which party is playing juvenile politics. I vote (this time) for Pelosi and her team.

The other day a Denver radio station ran a news segment on how some local federal employees were being impacted by the Shutdown (I noticed 'Shutdown' was capitalized in that letter!). This station has an anti-Trump bias, so the story began by stating the Shutdown was entirely due to Trump's demands, with no mention of Pelosi's refusal to negotiate. There were some interviews with fed employees who were having difficulty paying their bills. The segment ended by mentioning that one of the guys was thinking of selling his blood to help pay his bills. I know they were trying to tug at the listener's heartstrings, but I think they overreached! That got me to thinking about how the Shutdown has affected me: - The grocery store still has plenty of food.
- The liquor store had lots of beer.
- I've had no problem buying gas.
- The Internet and phone services still work great.
- The power and heat haven't stopped working.
- I noticed a lot of speed traps last Monday so the cops are still working.
- I checked the TSA wait times at Denver's airport and they looked normal.
Could it be possible that we have a bit more government than we need?
