I think Solo has it pretty much right the flag represents southern pride and independence for most but its hard to understand all of it unless you have deep southern confederate heritage.  My great great grandfather rode with Nathan Bedford Forrest for four long years surrending at last at Gainesville, Alabama.  Forrest love him or hate him or neutral the man was a genius and there is no doubt about that.  He defeated yankee armies regularly three to four and five times the size of his army.
