Knee vs Chainsaw ... Warning nasty pic

Cleaning up my property Friday morning going jihad on hedge and vines . Some was 30 ft. or better so I was cutting as high as possible so I could handle the brush. I made several cuts and it was still hanging from the vines I made another cut and it all came down knocking the chainsaw into my knee. Very deep hitting bone. I promise the next time I use the Farm Boss I'll have chainsaw chaps on . The ride coming up the end of the month is still a go with or without me.

Its all sewed up inside and out now just swelled up like a football and thump's with every heartbeat. Hoping in 12 days I will not need a orthopedic surgeon the doctor who stiched me up claimed I got a 50/50 chance $:-\$

Joe, I feel for you. Chainsaws teen to leave a dirty nasty cut.

I know as I have a scar across my left knee from a chainsaw that kicked back. No, I didn't have chaps on either. had to walk about a quarter mile to trucks and wait in a sawmill town for Doc to bet there to clean and stitch me up. Doc used a wire brush or last least that what it felt like to clean the cut out, then told me that no matter what he did the cut would leave a good scar. He was right. The chainsaw ruined a nearly new pair of Levis, didn't have much money back then so that was a big hit. Thankfully, I was on Gov time so he covered the cost.

Geez Joe, I cringed just looking at the picture. Years ago my neighbor hired a guy to trim out a tree that was near his and my property line. He slipped and in the process took off his left little finger. Went to the ER, got bandaged/stitched up, came back and finished the job. Said he wanted to do it while the pain killer they injected was still working. He stopped by a couple weeks later, said it's a good thing he did finish because once it wore off.....then described it as you did; felt like someone was pounding on it with a hammer with each heartbeat.

Worse part is it cut right on the bend of the knee . When he was cleaning it I could see the bone joint .

Having had both knees replaced I know what that feels like. Oh wait, I was knocked out, so no I don't. Just do everything they tell you and it will heal. You might need a few rehab visits to get the bend back in. You will have to get a pair of those kneehole jeans so everybody can see the scar.

Boy I'm sorry to hear about that Joe. Keep that knee under real close inspection for any kind of (post damage, post op) infection. Which can be worse than the big cut. Hopefully they gave you a course of antibiotics.

I was way up on a 30 foot extension ladder cutting big oak limbs to elevate my big trees. A huge (10-12 inch) limb came swinging down and knocked my ladder out from under me. Even though I had tied the top of the ladder to the tree, I was still hanging on to the limb stump with one arm, and holding the screaming chain saw out away from my body with the other arm, with my legs dangling out in thin air. Common sense would have been to just drop it, but it was a brand new saw and I didn't want it to get damaged. Clamping down on everything I was holding on to, I had the saw trigger wide open for a few seconds, before I realized I needed to release it to stop the flying chain. I was yelling my head off for the wife to come to the back yard from the front. As soon as she sees me hanging up there, she's like.... what kind of stupid sh!t are you doing now!?????

I answered, Honey, please just get the ladder back under me as fast as you can, then I can come down and we can talk about it after I'm down. Bless her heart.

Having planted all kinds of stuff on my property 25 years ago, a lot of it now needs trimmed back to a nice 6-7 feet tall. It all needs done from up on an 8 foot step ladder, and I'm seriously thinking I don't want to spend all day on an 8 foot step ladder with power tools. Lucky for me, my 18" chain saw is totally gummed up and won't start at all.

electric pole chainsaw works great when on top of a 8 footer.

Well, call me a panzy but I wouldn't have been able to look. I almost lopped my left index finger off with a hatchet chopping kindling this winter. One look at that that little $1400 mistake was enough (my mistake there too, should went to clinic instead of the ER). Best wishes for healing and recovery.

How do you spell DUMMY? I worked with a good friend that is a tree cutter 30 years ago. One of his main rules, never use a chainsaw on a ladder, kinda stuck with me all these years.

I had an incident sharpening a knife on a high speed buffer. The buffer grabbed the knife and sent it into my little finger. Cut to the bone but after debriding and stitches and a ridiculous fee the worst part was the anti-suicide lecture. Yeah I'm gonna kill myself by lopping off a little finger so I bleed out really slow.

I've noticed over the years chain saws-hellz bellz-Any saw do NOT give a rats patootie WHAT it's cutting-it's Job description is CUT. Other than that newer table saw I watched the demonstration of on This Old House fairly sure other saws don't discriminate tween wood and meat!

Had a cursed good chain saw when I lived in Texas. When it took a bite outa my hand I KNEW it weren't nuttin but operator error.

NOT as bad as what transpired fer you Joe BUT it got my tenshun!

Yikes is an understatement. I'm sure hoping you have no issues after it is all healed up. Keep a good eye out for infections of course. Find bandages with Silver in the bandage. You won't be sorry. If you can't find let me know, PM me I'll explain.

Joe, holy crap! I know that's gonna hurt when the pain pills are done. I also know how it feels to be the one getting hurt and experiencing the consequences of that one false move. I also know it took courage to post what happened straight up. Maybe your mishap will make the next person entering into a similar situation think it through a bit more. I pray for complete healing without that surgery. I bet you heard it a thousand times already but you know it could have been a whole lot worse. Take care of yourself

I thought I was being careful I thought wrong . I'll have chainsaw chaps on the next time I touch that thing and hope anyone on here will do the same it happened in the blink of the eye and yes it could have been worse.

I hope your healing goes well. Do watch out for infection. Chain saw blades are notoriously unclean.

That's actually the second time I've seen that pic. Yesterday my wife, the Facebook addict, said look at this and stuck it in my face. It wasn't pleasant. I wasn't pleasant. I'm sure you must be hurting a bunch right now. I'm sorry to hear that that's going on.

that is going to leave a scar, YIKES! sure hope the healing process goes as smooth and painless as possible.

Not even sure leather chaps or some other form of chaps would have prevented all of the damage, but something is always better than nothing.

me not using safety glasses when cutting wood, even by hand small limbs, has not been good with the sawdust getting into my eyes when the wind kicked up. Have had off and on issues with that one eye ever since pussing up and being irritated red all because I was too lazy to wear safety glasses.

Been there, got the tee shirt and the matching scar. As many have already said, watch for infection, chain saw cuts are dirty. Start walking ASAP to keep the joint flexible even while the knee is still swollen. And here's to hoping you heal quickly with no complications.

I bet you are a sore puppy today. I can tell you that those pain pills will do more than make the pain in your knee go away. They put some of your other bodily functions to sleep. Hope you don't need any more surgery.
